Welcome!

Sputnik, 1957 – the Soviet Union launches the first satellite in outer space and humanity begins its breathtaking scientific explorations into the far unknown.

Sputnik 2, 2021 the Theatre Department produces its second series of adventurous student written and directed productions for the digital world despite the challenges of the pandemic.

Wes borrowed “Sputnik” as a fitting name to describe this initiative. We are profoundly grateful to our pioneering writer/directors Liv Joan, Katie Johnson, and Collin Smith, and their dedicated stage managers and production teams for imagining new possibilities in every phase of production.

We are also grateful to all those who mentor our students: Wes, Richard, Laura, Heather, Jim, Ben, Elektra, and to Roz for promoting this event, Erica for coordinating tickets and house management, and Steve who is our new production manager for all student productions. Special thanks to video artist, Kathy Wittman and costume consultant, Leslie Held who provide a deep well of inspiration and support to our students.

We applaud the courage, the resiliency, the vision, and the artistry of our student writers and directors and their commitment to realize their original, transformed plays in such a splendid fashion. Enjoy the ride!
